Excerpt from a Letter to Choral Parents from Dr. Lambert

May 8, 2006

I hope you have heard by now of the tremendous success our choirs enjoyed at the Heritage Music Festival [in San Diego the end of March].  Signs are displayed around the high school congratulating the choral students for "bringing home the gold."  In addition to all four choirs receiving gold medals, the Madrigals won the Outstanding Choral Group Award and the Adjudicators Award for being the highest scoring choir at the Festival.  Langley also won the Choral Sweepstakes Award for having the two highest scoring choirs participating.  The trophies will be displayed in the awards case in the foyer of the auditorium.

While Langley choirs have earned gold from previous competitions, I am prompted to write this letter. . . . to share with you the superlative rankings the students received.  And for the first time in my history with these music festivals, two of the three judges added handwritten comments on the back of the ranking sheets.  Their accolades impressed us all. . . .

These students turned in simply excellent performances.  Their efforts reflect honor on themselves, on you, as their parents, and on Langley High School.  Congratulations to all!

The most beautiful tone that I have heard this weekend.  Great repertoire!  Great direction!  Fantastic concert decorum!  Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and choral art with us today.  (Dr. Karen Parthun)

Each one of your ensembles displays great understanding of text and a wonderful commitment to singing the best in choral literature.  Overall - once again - amazing work.  Thank you.  (Dr. Jocelyn Jensen)

My initial reaction was one of excitement, because you have such a rich, full sound.  Thank you again for a stunning performance.  (Dr. Jocelyn Jensen)

Women's Chamber Choir

Judges' Comments/Heritage Music Festival:

Three judges:  Numerical scores 94, 94, 94 (out of 100)

Great literature!  Great concert decorum!  The best sound I have heard from only nine people!  Elegant and fantastic direction!  You represent such excellence in choral performance.  I hope you realize how talented you are!  Thank you for sharing your gift of music with us today!  (Dr. Karen Parthun)

I have no more adjectives - your artistry and integrity are so complete that your students (ensembles) reflect your constant quest for excellence.  We always learn in this adjudication process.  Thank you for risking and creating art.  Stunning performance, ladies.  (Dr. Jocelyn Jensen)

Madrigals

Judges' Comments/Heritage Music Festival:

Three judges:  Numerical scores 96, 96, 97 (out of 100)

You need to know how incredible your performance was today.  Refined, intelligent, passionate, well conceived, awesome in execution!  You moved me to tears and joy and silence and transported my spirit.  It takes a first-rate choir to accomplish all that!  Thank your director.  Thank your parents.  Thank your principal.  Thank the people in your life whose memories give you depth and maturity to put into your music.  I thank you!  (Dr. Karen Parthun)

This performance has definitely been the highlight of my two days of adjudication in San Diego.  Each one of your ensembles reflects a search for excellence - an expectation of moving into a world of sound painting and textual honesty.  I honestly loved all of your presentations, but this particular one grabbed my soul.  All I can say is - continue to make a difference in the lives of others through the singing of the best choral literature available.  Thank you so much.  (Dr. Jocelyn Jensen)
