"Langley Choirs Give Back!"

2006-07 was an exciting one for Langley choirs, due in no small part to achieving our goal of purchasing a Steinway Grand Piano for the stage.   Understanding how extremely fortunate we are to have the support of such generous parents and friends in the Langley community, 2007-08 will find us reaching out to those who are less fortunate. As the school year progresses, check back here to learn more about how "Langley Choirs Give Back"!

Voicemale Gives Back with Heart!  On Valentine's Day, Voicemale sang "My Girl" to twelve lucky girls  during 7th period. They also sang to a number of teachers and the front office staff!  Donations for their "singing valentine" will be split equally between the American Heart Association and the Spring Trip.  Thanks, gentlemen, for spreading the Valentine's spirit not only through the halls of Langley but to the AHA!

The Madrigals Give Back!  On February 4th, the Madrigals performed at The Virginian, a retirement residence, as part of our "giving  back" campaign.  Choir parent Betsy Hubbell, who attended the performance, wrote "The residents were soooo impressed with these kids, their commitment, their intellect, and talents.  They really gushed about the performance, costumes, and discipline these kids exhibited.  It was a great success!"

December 11th, Madrigals Give Back!  Cristi Leslie, parent of Madrigal Senior, Katie Leslie, writes: "Oh my goodness!! What an experience that was last night! The residents of Cameron Glen (Assisted Living) were so appreciative of the Madrigal Performance! It was if they were children, seeing Santa for the first time!! And our kids were wonderful! They interacted with the residents, caroled the halls, sometimes going into the rooms of the residents, and didn't seem to want to leave! It warmed my heart, and when they sang the last song, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", the residents sang with them. The kids were so touched that many were tearful as the song ended. What a wonderful gift they gave to those less fortunate than themselves!! All of the parents would have been so proud of their kids!!"

Having enjoyed themselves so much at Cameron Glen, the Madrigals decided to continue the fun and traveled to Reston Town Center, where they caroled in front of Clyde's.  Apparently, many driving by in cars slowed and rolled down their windows, and pedestrians stopped and asked to have their pictures taken with them!  Another fun event, as the LHS Choral Department Gives Back!

The Women's Chamber Choir Gives Back!  United Airlines and Hospice Care of Virginia would like to say "thank you" to the Women's Chamber Choir for volunteering their time to give back to the community.

Women's Chamber performed Saturday, December 8th, at Dulles Airport.  United Airlines hosted a "Fantasy Flight" for children who are terminally ill.  All the children and their families were given boarding passes to the North Pole.  After entering through security, they boarded their flight, and while the plane taxied around the runway, the children were treated to the movie Mickey's Christmas.   A half an hour later, the children exited the plane at a different gate, into the "North Pole"!  The employees at United worked for weeks on the decorations, and even had it snowing when the children came off the plane! Santa, Mrs. Claus, all the elves, and even Ronald McDonald were there and our Women's Chamber Choir performed Christmas carols.

Diane Anderson, parent of WCC Junior, Caroline Anderson, writes, "When the choir was done, the children wanted to make "special requests" so our girls all sat on the floor and began singing whatever Christmas songs were requested.  It was such a sweet time and parents were taking pictures of their children dancing and hugging.  One of the little girls even asked if they were all princesses."  A heartwarming and wonderful day!

LHS Choirs Give Back!  On Saturday, October 20th, Madrigals, Women's Chamber Choir, and Voicemale gave back to the community by performing as part of Churchill Road Elementary School's 50th Anniversary "Homecoming" Celebration. From "Runaround Sue" to "Unforgettable" and "Hit Me with a Hote Note," LHS students delivered a fun time for all, while helping to support the efforts of one of our pyramid schools as well.  Some of our students had fun as well!

" Matt Anderson (Sophomore, Concert Choir) modeled the heart of serving someone this summer by agreeing to be a 'buddy' to a student with special needs on a trip to Frontier Ranch, Colorado with his local Young Life group.  Matt worked hard to raise his own support to take the expensive trip.  Instead of simply running around with his friends during the summer, Matt chose to give a week of his time to his 'buddy.'   Matt's 'buddy' later told me that he had the best week of his life, and I believe that week was a result of Matt's actions throughout the week.  He modeled a servant's heart the entire week by taking care of this special needs student.  He did an incredible job giving back to his community!"
-Sean Click, Young Life

When most teenagers are thinking "How can I have fun this summer?", sophomore Virginia Lee (Women's Select Treble Choir) was thinking about making a difference in the life of a child with special needs.  Virginia volunteered to work for 2 weeks at the Kidz Clubhouse summer camps for kids with special needs.  Virginia had the privilege of being a buddy to Gillian, who is a 6-year-old beautiful girl with Down syndrome.  Gillian's mom had the following to say about Virginia...

"Gillian was embraced by the loving care of her volunteer, Virginia. Gillian quickly bonded with Virginia and I was so impressed by her caring attitude."

Jamaica is often thought of as a fun vacation spot with white sand and sparkling turquoise waters but beyond the all-inclusive resorts there lives a large population of poor and underserved people.  As a member of a team put together by HOPE worldwide, senior James Rosenquist (Madrigals, Concert Choir) spent some time in Kingston, Jamaica serving on HOPE Youth Corps.  His team worked to refurbish a medical clinic in downtown Kingston where many people come to receive medical care for a reduced rate.  He also spent time working with children at an orphanage, where he quickly became what his other team members described as a “human jungle gym” since the kids were often seen climbing all over him.  When the team of young people arrived each morning to spend time with the orphans, the children would stream out of their crowded home and straight into the hearts of the volunteers.  Langley Chorus played a special part of this service since James took a large suitcase full of the LHS flip flops to give to the children and other people in Jamaica who needed them.  The shoes were quickly distributed to many grateful children and adults alike who were excited to get new shoes – thank you, James, for helping Langley Chorus to “give back”!
